Reflections on gifted children

Some of the questions that often arises when one starts talking about talented children is: Who are the gifted children?, Are the same talented children gifted children?

The aim of this paper is to increase interest and have different definitions have been ascribed to the term talent and giftedness, to offer possible answers to these questions. For some authors these concepts no difference but for others, talent and giftedness do not have the same meaning.

Etymologically the word comes from Latin Talentum talent, which meant in the historical period and region where it is used, measure of weight or sum of money. Monks and Mason (2000) discuss these terms as synonyms: gifted (gifted), highly capable (highl able) and gifted (talented).

We can talk about that people have some kind of talent, but not all develop, due to several factors that influence such as family, school, motivation, social status etc. That is why we must define the current talent and potential talent.

Current talent who has already been developed and demonstrated by the person who has talent and potential to which any factor or circumstance, the person has not been able to develop and demonstrate.

Authors such as Betancourt, Renzulli, Gardner, Sternberg, each defined differently. For Stenberg three types of talent:
1. Analytical
2. Creative
3. Practical
One of the problems inherent in the existence of children with talent identification. Although there are no standardized instruments and to identify talented children, the commonly used methods can be distinguished into two groups: objective and subjective.

Among the nominations are subjective by peers, teachers, parents, and self-nominations the drawback in these types of methods is often not accurate and sometimes misses some of these children, because we `perceptions different.

In our state of Tabasco, we are in the process, not only to detect them, but because of proposals that have been raised, to cater for gifted children and found three types: acceleration, grouping, and enrichment.

We are safe in this process and achieve our goal, because potentially see that our children (as) have great potential and talent, some by pure genetic, others like to study.
